Text:
In those early days, filth was ever poured before your door, and the air was thick with curses and wailing. You bore the lash and the spittle of the people, so long as they claimed you had wronged them. You severed ties with all your lovers. You scattered the wealth you had gathered, giving it to those who truly needed it. You turned your gaze from the shifting tides of power and did not reach for the spoils of victory, not even once. Slowly, the voices of pity grew a little louder. Slowly, the people returned to their own lives, forgetting the lingering pain from the aftermath of that mad game. Slowly, you, too, ceased to wake in terror from nightmares, no longer sitting hollow-eyed until dawn.
And so, on a quiet morning, you slipped away from the capital without farewells, refusing even the company of friends. You sentenced yourself to an exile that would last a lifetime, for guilt, no matter how faded, never truly lessens. You would wander to many places, do many good deeds. Strangers would welcome you, would love you, but none could keep you. Only in taverns would you sometimes catch word of homeland, a familiar name or two slipping into the talk. Then you would feed your camel and ride on, ever further into the unknown.
