When the last Sultan fell, the people gathered in silence around the Golden Throne, waiting to see the new ruler before deciding whether to cheer or spit.



You came forward with a veiled woman. Bowing, you offered your hand and guided her onto the throne with practiced reverence.



Two highborn ladies, mothers of many, stepped forth without a word. They knelt at the veiled woman's feet, drew aside her silks, and revealed her face: Sadani.



"I carry the Sultan's bloodline," she said, her jeweled head held high, her gaze cutting through the crowd like a scimitar. "This child shall wear the crown. Its father is dust. You will kneel to your new, rightful, and supreme Sultan."



The noblewomen pressed their foreheads to the marble and proclaimed their findings: the timing of her pregnancy perfectly aligned with the late Sultan's last visit to her chambers, the robust health of her unborn child, and their eternal loyalty to the legitimate bloodline.



Of course, after this performance, their houses would find favor when the new order came. As for when Sadani truly conceived, or by whom - that mattered less than the flies buzzing about the throne.



The crowd stood frozen, exchanging uneasy glances. None had heard of late Sultan leaving any heir. Yet here was a child with claim beyond dispute, and more telling, not a soul seemed inclined to weep for its dead father. The final truth hung heavier than palace tapestries: You had placed Sadani on the throne. You had pulled down the last Sultan.



One by one, the nobles bent their knees. You remained standing, watching the sea of bowed heads which on lapis lazuli floors, in courtyards, through bazaars and alleys, as the realm submitted to its new power.



And you? You were its beating heart. You were the Regent of the realm. You were the true Sultan who stands beside the throne.
