At last you ended the Sultan's Game.The people who supported you gazed up, waiting to see what rule would begin under your hand.



Your first act was to wipe fear from their faces.



You commanded all messengers to proclaim that your realm would no longer be ruled through terror. You wished for all to stretch their body and mind without fear for their life. You wanted your people to create, to labor, to revel, to love, to rejoice. The suffering of others would stir only your compassion and remorse. Never would you poke people's bleeding wounds with a stick as the last Sultan had done.



Then you summoned your Vizier, Nawfal. You told him you would abolish slavery throughout the empire. These former slaves would toil as free men, for their own happiness. Next, you announced the formation of a Noble Council, where each noble's voice would be weighted by the number of freemen in his domain. Those who emancipated their slaves soonest would hold greater sway.



You crushed the nobles' resistance while showering them with favors. You lifted up the oppressed while quietly pruning away the rotten among them. You killed many, indeed, but with these deaths you bought a new world. You did not know if the price was fair. Or perhaps... all necessary deeds were fair.



The work was hard, exhausting. Yet you knew you were loved and supported.



Nawfal toiled sleeplessly by your side, barely pausing to eat, yet his eyes remained sharp, his spirit unbroken. In rare moments of respite, he would silently offer you the water pipe. Outside the palace windows, flowers and dates from your people piled high. Children shrieked "Long live the Sultan!" when you appeared. Young men and women crowded recruitment stations, eager to serve the new empire. Ragged elders beat nobles who spoke ill of you with their canes. Nobles' sons brought their household guards to swear fealty, their eyes burning like live coals.



To be a Sultan beloved, this too is a great cause.
