That afternoon, the maids sat around as usual, listening to Lumera tell a story. She held a scroll of parchment, her voice still flat.
She said there was a young girl whose father was a damnable scoundrel and whose mother was a foolish prostitute. The father sold the mother to a brothel in the Dark Alley, then tricked her to escape and sold her again until the brothel owner beat her to death. Yet it was this foolish mother who secretly saved money to let the girl learn to read with a teacher at the market. It was also this mother who, on her deathbed, held her hand and told her never to fall in love with men.
The maids were silent; anyone could tell this was Lumera’s own story.
At the end of the story, the girl stabbed a small knife stolen from her master’s house into her father's throat. At that time, the scoundrel was trying to taste his own daughter. Blood spurted out, and the girl ran back to her master’s house without even wiping her face.
The maids surrounded the young girl, stroking her hair. The older maids murmured curses, took out all kinds of treats from their aprons and stuffed them to her, while the young laundry girl promised to make her the best dress with lace. They spoke softly, comforting each other, and digesting the story.
Finally, the bell rang, and the servants had to go to work. After they left, Lumera noticed you standing in the corridor. She stood up and handed you the booklet she had written.
