  Bleating and laughter drifted up the hall; you stood in the doorway to welcome the poet. He embraced you warmly and again thanked you for helping him at the last banquet.
  
  "I would have built a wall of ten thousand poems to keep all those conflicts out... but ten thousand seemed still not enough!" he said with a laugh, settling easily on the carpet in your receiving room and grabbing a handful of the pastries your servants had set out. "Your sweets were excellent... Believe me, I seldom said so. Trust old Hassan—I knew whose wine is best and whose pastries smell the finest!"
  
  You chatted lightly for a while; then, idly teasing his little sheep, you asked how old it was. In your memory it had always been about this size...
