Asal visited with some leaves of manuscript. He spread the sheets of minuscule script before you; you lifted one and saw it was filled with entries—each term followed by its pronunciation, its appearance, its use. In these few leaves alone, he had explained a hundred things of the world.
"I had never thought I would show these to anyone outside my family." He lifted his chin, plainly proud. "The Angler's is a livelihood to me, and I do it well—but the Encyclopedia, that is my life."
Then he pointed to the very last entry on the last sheet: "Lord of Revels: a powerful being from another world, who lures humans into Its banquet by means of Ambiguities. After the third banquet, It devours their shells..." The entry even described the Lord's appearance and how to defeat It.
"You are qualified to join my work, qualified to leave your name in the greatest enterprise under heaven." He looked you in the eye. "Henceforth, if you encounter anything remarkable... call me to witness it, and I will record it into the Encyclopedia."
He gathered the pages, bowed with measured grace, and took his leave.
