Asal, the proprietor of the Angler, came to pay you a visit.
Courteous as ever, he presented a book as a gift before plunging straight into his request.
"There is a certain grand vizier of the Empire, renowned for his love of books..." Noticing you start to adjust your robes, he adds, somewhat tactlessly, "Oh, I do not mean you, of course—you, sir, are beyond comparison. I speak of Lord Nawfal. I hear his collection is vast beyond imagining, filled with volumes so rare they can't be found in any market. To borrow a metaphor from the poetry of the fallen kingdom, his library is like a giant in the desert, like nectar stored in the Khan's golden pavilion."
You exchanged a wordless look with him, waiting for him to continue, yet he seemed to expect you to understand his meaning without further prompting. After a long pause, the Bookstore Owner furrowed his brow and sighed, forced at last to speak plainly:
"...I take it you are a man of influence, and a bookworm as well... Might you introduce me to Lord Nawfal? I wish merely to behold his collection, nothing more."op1: "Nothing more", is it?!

- Prompt:
What did he mean by that—did he think it an easy request? Anyone with half a wit knew Nawfal guarded his books like glass goblets ready to shatter at the slightest touch. Never mind you, his sworn rival—there likely was not a single noble in the court who had ever set foot in his library!!
You were about to curse Asal when he at once produced a fine sandalwood casket: "I also brought a gift-book that lord might fancy—do you think he would like it?"
Swallowing your anger, you opened the box: inside a rare old volume lay swaddled in silk. You could not help glancing again at the "calling gift" he had given you earlier—the gap was... considerable.
"I truly wish to visit Lord Nawfal's library... and I believe you won't want to miss this rare opportunity either." Asal spoke earnestly, expectantly; after waiting a beat and seeing you had not taken the hint, he added: "I mean—perhaps you could also furnish a gift of your own? After all, he is a courtier and so were you; surely you knew best what tickled a lord's fancy?"
What—did you want so badly to stroll Nawfal's stacks? Had you time for such leisure? And you were to curry favor with gifts for that man? On what grounds? Slamming the casket shut, fuming, you nevertheless found your mind straying to whether your own collection held aught more precious than this book...
