Asal seems to have a book hidden on his person... a book of Nawfal's.
op1: Stop him.op2: Pretend you saw nothing.
- Case #1:
- Rite: The Copyist
- Prompt:
Asal recoiled as if stung by a bee, while you reached to see just what he had hidden.
What a joke—Nawfal had been generous in opening his vault to you; if he then discovered your companion stealing a book, where would your face be? Next time he flayed you in court, you would not be able to hold your head up again!
Your tussle drew Nawfal; he came past the servants and stepped between you.
Flushed with shame, Asal finally slumped and pulled the book from his breast, then fell to his knees with a thunk.
"Your library is magnificent, like trapping the stars in a birdcage—of all those books, this was the only one I had not read! I simply could not bear to let knowledge slip past me... I knew you would never permit me to return, so I meant to copy it and put it back! I swear it! I swear by the Encyclopedia!"
His voice echoed in the vaults. You said nothing, only turned to Nawfal.
"The Encyclopedia, you say? I recall there once was a family who vowed to record all things under heaven..." Nawfal mused. "And you say you have read all the rest of my collection? There are thousands of volumes here."
Asal nodded hard. Nawfal randomly chose a few and quizzed him. To your surprise, Asal could recite each from the first page...
"Impressive indeed... I admire your memory and your hunger for knowledge. But I cannot condone theft. Fortunately, my Lord [player.name] here forestalled you in time." Nawfal glanced at you, then said to Asal, "I can permit you to make a copy—yet my books cannot leave my vault. So you must take up residence here for the next few days. How about that?"
The thought crossed your mind: this was like setting a cat loose in the cream—or Nabhani loose in a House of Delights.
Asal thanked Nawfal in rapture, and then turned to thank you as well.
- Case #2:
- Enable Event: Start Return to the Forest
- Prompt:
If Nawfal was displeased, then you were very pleased. You cast Asal a subtle smile and looked coolly away.
The two of you left Nawfal's vault one after another.
Before you each went home, Asal, half-hiding his face, murmured his thanks.
