  Samir only shakes his head. "I know that's the easiest way out. But I won't accuse any innocent woman—they've suffered enough. You have no idea how many in this palace—" He stops, sighs, then produces a letter long prepared and presses it into your hand. The ink is still fresh, the handwriting hurried. "I didn't do any of it. No woman ever miscarried under my care. But... I'm sorry for dragging you into this. If the Sultan demands an answer, tell him it was me. At least you won't have to die for my sake."
