After handing you the gems, Jenna—unusually—wiped the sweat from her brow, hesitated, then said softly, "There's something I think you should know."
She drew you into an empty quiet room and produced a small stone—clear, spotless, blazing; just a little piece, yet it almost stabbed the eyes. "A diamond?!" you nearly cried out.
It was the only kind of gem on the market reserved to the Sultan; all the diamond mines were under his control. Every stone that somehow reached the market caused a frenzy of bidding at absurd prices. But how had Jenna gotten it?
You narrowed your eyes and tested it in the light; however you looked, the conclusion was the same. "Where did you get this?" you asked her.
"A few days ago someone offered me a rough stone—it wasn't expensive at all, at least not 'diamond-rough' expensive. Who knew it would cut into a treasure like this!" Jenna's eyes burned with undisguised fervor and obsession, but she hadn't let the windfall make her lose her head. She swallowed, mastered her reluctance, and closed your fingers around the gem—priceless beyond words."—But that's far from ordinary, isn't it? The more I thought about it, the more I felt it would bring me trouble rather than profit, so I decided to give it to a power-holder like you. If... I mean if, if you could find out its source, all the better. If... well, if we could safely make use of cheap diamonds, or even obtain more of them, wouldn't that be wonderful?"
