Outcome Actions
- Rite: The Sultan's Summons
- Prompt:
Something went wrong.
Raedina came to your residence and handed you a splendid, gold-lacquered roll of parchment; her hand trembled beyond her control. "The Sultan's eunuch brought it... to me... to Princess Raedina's residence," she said, forcing calm, her gaze still steady. "He said he had heard of a most charming princess and wished to see me... and that his harem was still empty." A throb of pain crossed your brow. By imperial law, tribal princesses had the right to choose imperial nobles for husbands—an old Sultan's rule to win the loyalty of tribal chiefs... Even the Sultan was, in theory, not allowed to force a tribal princess to marry him. Raedina had likely chosen this identity with that in mind.
"Our king... is not much fond of rules, is he?" She mustered a smile. "But of course, perhaps he merely wishes... to toy with me, and not truly bring me into the harem. He believes an invitation to the harem is a supreme honor for every woman in the empire... and thinks I will be more obedient for it... that's my guess."
You and she shared a long, silent look. Everyone in the empire had to answer the Sultan's summons, but... "If it means sleeping with him, I'd rather die." Raedina stared straight at you. "Don't even think it. If he insists, I will tell everything before I die, and neither of us will escape. I won't sleep with the man who killed my mother; I won't sleep with a brother by blood—some might, but that's their business; I am not." You let out a long sigh. Yes—you had nearly forgotten this princess was no plaything to be toyed with by a king.
You spoke a long while more. In the end, you decided to find a companion to attend Raedina before the Sultan—someone noble, untouchable, yet charming enough to overshadow her so the Sultan would lose interest. A flawed plan, but there was no alternative.
