  Raedina comes to your residence and hands you a splendid, gold-lacquered roll of parchment. Her hands tremble uncontrollably. "The Sultan's eunuch brought it... to me... to Princess Raedina's residence," she said, forcing calm, her gaze still steady. "The Sultan said he has heard of the captivating princess and wishes to see me... He also said his harem is... rather empty."
  
  A throb of pain crosses your brow. By imperial law, tribal princesses have the right to choose imperial nobles for husbands—a regulation set by the former Sultan to win the loyalty of tribal chiefs... Even the Sultan is, in theory, not allowed to force a tribal princess to marry him. Raedina's choice of this identity at the time had likely taken this law into account.
  
  "Our king... is not much fond of rules, is he?" She forces a smile. "But of course, perhaps he merely wishes... to toy with me, and not truly bring me into the harem. He believes an invitation to the harem is a supreme honor for every woman in the empire... and thinks I will be more obedient for it... That's my guess."
  
  You and she share a long, silent look. Everyone in the empire has to answer the Sultan's summons, but... "If it means sleeping with him, I'd rather die." Raedina stares straight at you. "Don't even think about it. If he insists, I will tell him everything before I die, and neither you nor I will escape. I won't sleep with the man who killed my mother... and I won't sleep with a brother by blood—some might be willing, but that's their business. I am not." You let out a long sigh. Yes—you have nearly forgotten this princess is by no means a toy for any ruler to manipulate.
  
  You two speak for a long while more. In the end, you decide to find a companion to accompany Raedina before the Sultan—a person of high rank, difficult for the Sultan to approach, yet charming enough to overshadow her so the Sultan will lose interest. The plan is riddled with flaws, but you have little choice.
