Better Dead Than Living
You visited Jabal’s home, where most of it was in disarray… yet one wall’s collection gleamed with meticulous care—exquisite swords of triumph, spearheads wrested from enemy generals, inscribed helms marking feats of war, battle banners enshrined beneath costly crystal casings… even a string of dried noses and ears!

Jabal could regale you with tales for days, but [xiaochou.name] needed only to gaze into his eyes, into the glint of brass… and all was known. And so, like battle-forged partners, they reminisced—of fallen brothers, of days of fire and steel, all fading into the stories passed among old soldiers. Only glory endured, bound to these relics.

Did warriors sacrifice for such honors, or did their sacrifices forge them? Neither [xiaochou.name] nor you could answer.

To Heaven
You brought [xiaochou.name] to meet Gulis, the most traditional warrior you knew. When you found him, he was drawing his bow with bated breath… Like all nobles with pride. [xiaochou.name] cared little for interrupting a slave’s focus—the Mirror began at once with questions of conquest, of the glory it might bring…

The Mirror was skilled in long-winded speeches, and Gulis held his bow drawn all the while… as if testing the limits of his body and focus. Only when [xiaochou.name] finished did he loose the arrow, piercing the bullseye a hundred paces away. "Only the souls of worthy warriors ascend to the sacred mountain where our ancestors dwell. It is that simple. Cowards languish in the darkness below." So [xiaochou.name] asked what warrior souls do upon that mountain. Why, they hone their skills for the holiest battle of all—to guard the world, of course… Ah, you humans excel at endless nesting and repetition. "Like two mirrors gazing into each other," you remarked with a sneer.

We Speak of Dogs
When you asked Faris of glory and conquest, predictably, he led you to a fountain crowned with a statue of a dog… Aye, a true bronze hound, donated by its master to honor some loyal hunting beast of yore. Then came the graves—who knew the city held so many monuments to dogs! And tombstones, carvings, signs, inscriptions… Faris, of course, had marked them all. Yet in the end, he proved that glory could etch even a dog’s memory into permanence, more vivid than most men leave upon the world.

[xiaochou.name] was less pleased with this answer, for to serve human only proved the dog was conquered—yet the glory of being conquered seemed to muddle the Mirror’s thoughts…

Hollow Shell
"So this is what you deem worthy of glory?" [xiaochou.name] rapped a knuckle against the King of Flames’ armor—"A gilded puppet, dancing to another’s strings? You mock human better than I ever could, [player.name]."

Yet as the Mirror scoffed, it caught the reflections in the King of Flames’ visor—too many to count. The echoes of heroes, the hopes of the suffering, the seething hatred for all oppressors… the wildfire of rebellion that would consume everything… [xiaochou.name] saw the magic in it, the ruinous power of what human craved after conquest—and the Mirror was impressed.

Remember You for the Game
You told [xiaochou.name] that as a courtier, you had achieved no great deeds—just another forgotten name in the annals of history. But now, you had a chance. Posterity would remember the name [player.name], for this mad game, for all you had done within it... "So this is why you play so earnestly?" [xiaochou.name] laughed. "Then let me see it through. Let me see if you can conquer this game... and what reward you claim."

A Drop of Oil
You couldn’t shake the feeling that people now looked at you differently—perhaps with more awe, more fear, or even more reverence. Whatever it was, your words carried more weight than before. You broached the subject with a servant or two, but they could only stammer, "It’s as if we suddenly remembered some great deeds of yours… yet when we try to recall them, nothing comes to mind." This, you supposed, was the "gift" from the being in the mirror—just a drop of oil mixed into memory, and everything would taint itself, shift without resistance. With a sigh, you dismissed the servants and fought the urge to wonder: How much of my past has been rewritten? For now, at least, you knew who you were. You knew what you wanted. And you still dared to meet your reflection’s gaze.
