Things Warriors Do Not Need

The women say that if Adila wants to slay a dragon with someone, she must marry that person – conveniently, they’ve been worrying about her marriage for quite some time. They hope you can recommend someone suitable to marry her.

But… you glance at Adila. After spending so much time with this warrior, you know her heart is set on battles, on honing herself through combats. Could she ever choose someone to marry? You can’t imagine it.

You hesitate under the weight of their expectations. With all eyes on you, you reluctantly begin to list the people you know. Who could possibly be a good match for her? From what you recall, she seems to have grown rather close to Maggie…

You propose to marry Adila yourself
Adila's jaw drops as she stares at you in shock, while the women whisper among themselves.

As the heir of an ancient family, a man of power, and a husband who has been married for years, your proposal is both tempting and improper.

“If you are to marry her,” the grandmother finally speaks up, “according to the laws of the Sultan, she will have the same rights as your wife. Am I correct?”

You nod in agreement. Among the nobility, every wife is treated equally, with no distinctions in status. The law demands fairness between them. But fairness is easier said than done… and that is one of the reasons why most men are not willing to marry a second, let alone a fourth, wife.

"Well," she continues, "though becoming a second wife may not be entirely proper, for Adila, with all her scars and unladylike ways... to find such a noble husband who treats his first wife so well – it's not a bad match after all."

The women nod in agreement, and Adila’s jaw drops even further.

“I will marry her,” you declare again.

The women burst into excited cheers. The grandmother wipes her tears, saying that she never thought she would live to see this day – Adila married. The other women chime in, saying Adila is far too unruly – always getting into fights and going on adventures – nothing like a proper woman should be. Since the dragon’s curse made their entire household ladies, they should stay quietly in the inner quarters, leaving all fighting to the men to atone for slaying dragons…

“Enough!” Adila suddenly shouts, standing up. Her entire body trembles, and her fists clench tightly.

“The dragon cursed us so we could never slay another dragon again. But the reason we cannot slay dragons isn’t because we’re women – it’s because we’ve convinced ourselves that women are unworthy of slaying dragons!”

With these words, she storms out of the room like a furious wind, leaving you and the other women behind. The grandmother and the aunts exchange uneasy glances, then awkwardly bid you farewell.

Though a bit regrettable, it seems this matter will have to be put on hold for now.

Your silence makes the entire situation awkward.
Honestly, you don't think what they said makes any sense – why should slaying a dragon be tied to a betrothal?

Adila observed your expression and felt more relieved. She turned to the women confidently, saying, "I can slay the dragon myself."

But the women advised her with worried faces, arguing noisily, and finally, Adila's mother made the final decision: "No, I do not agree for you to go alone!"

Adila finally couldn't take it anymore, stood up, and shouted at the women, "The dragon curses us to stop us from slaying it; the reason we can't slay dragons isn't because we're women – it's because we deem women unfit for dragon slaying!"

With that, she stormed out like an angry wind, leaving the women in the room exchanging glances, and they awkwardly bid you goodbye.

It seems this matter will have to be set aside for now.

You call Jabal over
As soon as Jabal enters, the women begin to stir.

After all, he comes from a warrior lineage – a prestigious family. He's a strong warrior and the Sultan's trusted minister... Who could be a more suitable match for Adila?

Yet, puzzled, Jabal looks at the gathered women and takes you aside: "You mentioned something about finding a dragon here, but what's going on?"

You explain the connection between dragon slaying and marriage.

Jabal scratches his head: "Ah... I see, though I feel we could slay the dragon together regardless of marriage, nobody would lose, right? But... I understand, being a noble, I understand these traditions."

He pauses, then says, "I want to have a private word with Adila, ah, and you, [player.name], let's have a quick discussion, then decide about marriage."

Away from the women's watchful eyes, you move to the next room. Once the servants withdraw and close the door, Jabal speaks: "I've always wanted to slay a dragon. If they truly exist, it should be my destiny to hunt one. But tell me truly – do they exist?"

Adila nods firmly.

"Then I will marry you. But let me be clear – I can't promise to love you, because my heart belongs to the hunt until I've faced the greatest beast alive. I'm not thinking about love or heirs right now. What I can promise is respect, a fighting partnership, and a shared quest to bring down this legendary creature. Would that work for you?"

Adila's eyes light up: "I couldn't ask for a better proposal! Don't worry about love. I never understood what's there to love about men anyway. But fighting alongside you to slay dragons? Now that's the kind of partnership I can appreciate!"

The two clasp hands with the firm grip of fellow warriors.

You breathe a sigh of relief. It seems the match is perfectly made.

You call Maggie over to discuss together
When Adiila sees Maggie, she looks startled, but soon, she lowers her head, avoiding Maggie’s gaze.

Maggie gently takes hold of her friend's hand, which habitually grasped a sword, and softly mentions a few names. The women begin chattering noisily: this one’s family isn’t good enough, that one isn’t strong enough… Finally, Adila can’t hold back any longer. She leaps to her feet, her fists clenched tightly. “Enough!”

Her sudden outburst startles Maggie and everyone else. For a brief moment, the room falls silent, only to be filled seconds later by Adila’s furious voice. “The dragon cursed us so we could never slay another dragon again. But the reason we cannot slay dragons isn’t because we’re women – it’s because we’ve convinced ourselves that women are unworthy of slaying dragons!”

With these words, she storms out of the room, pushing you aside as she goes. As she brushes past you, you think you catch a glimmer of tears in her eyes. Perhaps it is just your imagination.

You call Maggie over to discuss together
Adila's face lights up with frustration as she sees Maggie. She grabs Maggie’s hand, starting to complaint.

"Maggie, back me up here! Everyone keeps telling me I need to find a husband before I can slay the dragon. But I don't need a husband – what I need is a dumb dragon's head dripping with blood!"

Adila seems to regain all her courage, proudly announcing, "Listen, I know everything there is to know about slaying dragons. Nothing can stop me. I'll track down that dragon and kill it myself!"

Maggie is very worried, comforting her while dissuading her. After all, it’s a dragon, the largest, most cunning, and most terrifying beast in the world...

Perhaps Maggie’s worried look touches Adila, she ponders for a moment, looks up at you, "I don't need a man's help, but... perhaps Maggie is right. I hope that Maggie can help me, would that be all right? "
