Outcome

Prior

The potion proves remarkably effective, though you no longer share your findings with him after your falling-out.

Could a man-made medicine truly heal a creature not of humankind? There is only one way to know.

You unstopper the vial and let a single drop fall upon a wound that radiates an uncanny aura. In an instant, the gash closes entirely—even [s1.name] turns in astonishment, staring long at the bottle in your hand.

That very night, you write to Samir: the imitation works astonishingly well on non-human subjects.

At first touch, the wounded animal cries out in pain so sharp it shakes your resolve. You are forced to pin its body down with all your weight as before your eyes, the hideous wound begins knitting shut at a pace visible to the naked eye...

The remedy works, but at a terrible cost of suffering. You report your findings to Samir exactly as they occurred.

Not long after, Samir comes to visit you in person, followed by several attendants, all trained in the healing arts. He inquires carefully into the trials of the imitation. Then, after some thought, he says, "The Water of Life itself uses the power of renewal to mask the pain of bodily healing. My imitation, however, merely tears muscle and skin together by force, compelling them to mend—hence the terrible pain... I wonder if the addition of some sedatives might help... We must not overlook the harm it causes to the patient."

Behind him, his attendants scribble every word.

"You see, I don't have many people to call on, nor can I conduct enough trials." Samir gestures toward those trailing close behind him. How many of them truly admire his skill, and how many are sent by the Sultan to keep watch over him? "That's why I must trouble you. Perhaps you could ask among the people you know—whether some folk remedy for easing pain has escaped our notice... Our medicine advances too slowly, and the patients I can treat are far too few."

With that, Samir offers his thanks in advance and departs, swept away again by the entourage that shadows his every step.

The clear potion touches the wound, and [s1.name] gasps sharply—"By God, it burns! Too much—!" Before your eyes, the bleeding gash begins to close. The effect may not match the Water of Life, but it is miraculous all the same. Yet [s1.gender] grits the teeth the whole time, cursing through the agony. You have seldom seen [s1.gender(him,her)] in such a state.

Later, you relay [s1.name]'s words to Samir: "It feels like searing the flesh together with a hot iron. Unless one is on the brink of death, I doubt anyone would choose to endure it."
