You hurry to Samir's chambers in the palace. Normally, the royal guards at his door interrogate every man who passes, but today they look stricken with fear. Without a word, they step aside and open the way. Samir drags you inside. His back presses against the door, eyes darting nervously toward you. Only now do you notice the sweat soaking his face.

"They... they were just here. They spoke—if you can call that speaking. That wasn't a human voice... not even close. Oh God, it was terrifying... I think it's connected to the medicine—the one I gave you. But I—" He freezes, then whispers hoarsely, "Listen! They're here again!"

From outside comes a strange scraping, followed by the startled cries of the guards. Then, a taut, sickening creak—like a rope pulled to breaking...

Silence falls. Then: a knock. Once. Twice. Thrice.

Perhaps a tail. Or a bone. Or an eye. But not a human hand... Something beats against the door, shrieking in a voice beyond comprehension. The echo alone sends chills crawling up your spine...
