The Sultan wears many gems—some to boast of his dominion's riches, others to hint at his mood, still others for beauty, eccentricity, or sheer folly. But only diamonds carry true weight when offered to him. The empire's mines belong solely to the Sultan; to buy diamonds at ruinous cost, to cut and set them with your own purse, and then return them as tribute—this is the court's silent ritual of loyalty.

You cannot risk angering him over a trinket. So you order Jenna to use diamonds of the finest grade. Every expense is yours to bear—for the royal guard brought only a decree, and the Sultan himself has no use for Gold Coins.

Jenna fashions a golden armlet set with diamonds, etched with scenes of the Sultan's conquests. It gleams with a brilliance beyond compare—a true masterpiece.

Soon after you present it at court, a royal messenger arrives at your gate. He lifts his voice so all may hear:

"At last night's banquet, His Majesty—the radiant sun, the pillar of all peoples—wore the diamond armlet gifted by Lord [player.name]. He kept it upon his arm for the entire feast!"

The story spreads, twisted with each retelling, until people say you gifted the Sultan a life-sized statue of solid gold. May such rumors never reach his ears.

Still, you are spared. The extra coin you provided went untouched. Jenna returned every last piece.

A Golden Opportunity
You scrape together a chest of Gold Coins and a trove of precious gems, pressing them all into Jenna's arms.

You tell her to see it as providence itself—an opportunity to win the Sultan's favor. Make it vast. Make it splendid. Make it absurd if you must! Besides, it might even help you break an Extravagance Card.

She tests the weight of the gold, her face as pale as yours.

At last, Jenna forges a statue of the Sultan: life-sized, hollow, wrought entirely of gold. The cost in bullion is beyond reckoning. Your coffers lie bare, and Jenna's hoard vanishes with yours.

The Sultan's eyes are flawless diamonds. He raises his hand high, clutching a larger diamond in his fist. Beneath his feet lie the heads of his enemies, their skulls inlaid with rubies, sapphires, and lapis lazuli. The monument is so magnificent that even a god would falter into silence before it.

When the royal guard comes to collect the work, terror seizes him. He stares, slack-jawed, for long minutes, then stumbles back and flees to the palace. Reinforcements arrive, and only with eight men do they manage to carry the idol away.

The Sultan is overjoyed! He rises from his seat and stands beside the statue, studying its details one by one.

He lingers on its bold symbols of virility, then laughs as he turns to the women at his side. "Tell me—do you prefer the statue, or the man himself?"

The answer is exactly what he expects. Laughter fills the court, the Sultan basks in delight, and in such a mood all sins are forgotten. Every noble present etches the memory of your gift into their hearts, and they are left dazzled, jealous, and afraid.

Extra

Oh, the Sultan will surely allow you to break such a trivial Extravagance Card. He even scolds you lightly for troubling him with such a petty matter when he was savoring the statue's glory.
