The Look of Evil

Malkina wished to study scoundrels firsthand, hoping to distill from them a way to look wicked. She's convinced she could devise a whole style of dress and makeup that makes one appear far more sinister. You've agreed to help her—though, truth be told, not everyone would be flattered by the words: "Because you're such an evil person..."

Regular

You called Nayla over.
After a few gifts and flattering words from you, Nayla was all smiles. She eagerly shared with Malkina her secrets for making men helplessly devoted, giggling as she explained the delight of discarding them at their most besotted moment. Every gesture, every smile of hers made a deep impression on Malkina. By the end of their talk, Malkina gave Nayla a new look with her brushes, and both women were delighted.

You called Jawad over.
Jawad boasted at length that he was not a bad man at all—on the contrary, he was the best, the noblest, the most righteous! Malkina played along with polite flattery, observing his expressions with care. Whatever the truth of his claims, by the end, both he and Malkina seemed satisfied with their exchange.

You called Alim over.
Alim declared he'd seen every kind of scoundrel imaginable and feared none of them—yet even he admitted the Sultan's Game surpassed his limits. "Who could imagine nobles inventing such horrors?" he said. Then he animatedly described to Malkina the faces of street rogues and how he himself judged which marks to steal from just by their appearance. His stories proved helpful to her.

You called Fatuna over.
At first, Fatuna was reluctant to join a "study of evil," but as the conversation unfolded, she softened. Malkina praised her smooth skin and elegant posture, and Fatuna laughed, saying it was the fruit of long discipline. She shared skincare secrets, traded eye-makeup tricks—and then, just when you thought their meeting would end on a light note, Fatuna suddenly clasped Malkina's hand. "I am not guilty. But that does not matter to you. Guilt is not eyeshadow, nor the powder on one's skin. Guilt cannot be seen. If you believe yourself guilty, then you are. If you believe you are without guilt, then you are blameless." Malkina returned her grasp. The two women gazed at each other in silence for a long time.

Extra

A Conclusion on Evil
From these meetings, Malkina learned much about "evil". She sketched face after face onto sheets of mica, then held them up proudly.

"Villains should have narrower faces, deeper-set eyes, hollowed cheeks. Their colors lean toward blue, green, even violet."

With swift strokes she altered a bland, forgettable visage until it radiated menace.

"See? Now they look crueler, wealthier, more powerful—less to be trifled with!" Malkina laughed softly. "Thanks to you, I've truly learned a great deal."

Then, with brushes and powders, she turned her attention to you. A touch here, a shadow there... Soon you looked like a villain yourself. And really—what's so wrong with that?
