Before anyone could gasp, a vagrant girl hurried forth, kneeling to blot the wet hem with a handkerchief. Another vagrant servant immediately brought three dresses for Maggie to choose from. As Maggie rose, yet another servant had already set up a curtain for her to change behind. The sequence was flawless, leaving the other ladies in awe. By the time Maggie reappeared, at least three ladies had already spoken privately with the vagrant girls. Soon, these girls entered respectable households as maids. One introduction led to another, and before long, many more quick-witted girls had jobs.
