The two concubines sat on either side of the throne, both heavily made-up, exuding exotic fragrances, and posing alluringly. Neither so much as glanced at the other.

She leaned close to the Sultan's ear and whispered sweetly. He roared with laughter. He slapped Zazie's bottom playfully, lifted her light frame, and strode toward the inner chambers. No one dared follow—not you, not the courtiers, not the despairing Arzuna.
