You toss the card, broken in two, back into the magician's box with a crisp sound.
"You've really completed all the games, well done, my dear courtier," the Sultan says languidly. He waves his hand, and the magician knowingly presents the box to him. "As a reward, I will grant you a grand favor."
The Sultan grabs the bottom of the box and pours its contents onto the floor... You are startled to find all the cards are restored to their original state – every single one! The Sultan Cards that you broke with such agonizing effort, the ones that cost you harm to others and cruelty to yourself, now stand completely untouched... intact... perfect. Every. Single. Card!
"You can choose someone to continue this game; this is my gift. Judging by your expression, my dear, are you shocked? Do you really think the game was over? Come on!"
You freeze in place.
Choose someone? WHO exactly? Someone you've insulted? They'll draw the Bloodshed Card and slit your throat without hesitation. Someone you love? Watch them suffer the same torments you did, then fail – just like you did. Someone you don't care about? Haven't you already fed enough strangers to this meat grinder of a game? Remember when you plucked that leaf to shield yourself from the rain? That bird underneath – its feathers soaked through. It died. That was your doing, too. A familiar impulse rises in your chest – the same righteous fire that once made you stand against the Sultan's Game. But then reality crashes down. Playing again means repeating everything. And look around you: your allies are gone. Like a harvested cornfield with only a few forgotten cobs remaining. The lonely survivors after your game. Can you truly go through with this again? Is any of this right? Dejection washes over you. Maybe just point at someone – anyone – and be done with it. Why did you even play by the rules from the beginning? You had your chance to change fate and you squandered it! If only you could start over...
"Wait! Did you just mentionstart over?" "Like a trigger word has been spoken, a voice emanates from within you... It feels like a hook scratching the inside of your navel.
"Want to start over? It's just a formality, you want thisevery time, hurry up!
Just as you've done countless times before, you grab the hook. It yanks you – hard...
